High school tennis Net gain: Windjammers, Lions, Panther advance in state singles

 LeMole, Markowitz, Agbuya, Farris, Swain move on MPA singles tourney May 21

The Maine Principals’ Association's state singles qualifiers took place on Saturday, May 8 as Midcoast court athletes looked to advance to the premier high school individual tournament.

By day’s end, five area players — Camden Hills’ Ezra LeMole and Owen Markowitz, Belfast’s Kyle Agbuya and Madison Farris and Medomak Valley’s Coleman Swain — held the mettle to win two matches to advance.

Locally, student-athletes from Belfast Area High School, Camden Hills Regional High School of Rockport, Oceanside High School of Rockland, Medomak Valley High School of Waldoboro and Islesboro Central School participated.

Players participated in different regions. Belfast and Islesboro participated in Region 2 and Camden Hills, Medomak Valley and Oceanside in Region 3.

Each player’s first match was pro-set format, while the qualifying match was traditional three sets.

The MPA state singles tennis tourney will begin on Friday, May 21 at Lewiston High School.

The following is a recap of qualifying matches for area players:

Boys

Coleman Swain, Med, defeated Caleb Avery, Morse, 8-1; and defeated Casey Duncan, Lincoln Academy, 6-1, 6-0, to advance to the Round of 52.

Ezra LeMole, CH, defeated Cooper Blaisdell, Lawrence, 8-0; and defeated Luke Curnin, Mount Ararat, 6-0, 6-1, to advance to the Round of 52.

Kyle Agbuya, Bel, beat Brodie Lumbra, Mattanawcook Academy, 8-0; and defeated Jerry Harmon, Calais, 6-0, 6-0, to advance to the Round of 52.

Owen Markowitz, CH, defeated Jacob Steeves, Skowhegan, 8-1; and defeated Isaac Swain, Med, 6-0, 6-7 (3-7), 6-2, to advance to the Round of 52.

Kyan Mohammadi, CH, defeated Filip Diakonowic, Lincoln Academy, 8-3; and lost to Calvin Doherty, Brunswick, 6-3, 2-0, retired.

Noah Thackeray, CH, defeated Marcus Russian, Lincoln Academy, 8-1; and lost to Josiah Bloom, Waterville, 6-4, 4-6, 3-6.

Isaac Swain, Med, defeated Jack Rodrigue, Cony, 8-0; and lost to Owen Markowitz, CH, 0-6, 7-6 (7-3), 2-6.

Ian Doughty, Med, received a bye; and lost to Zander Chown, Mount Ararat, 1-6, 0-6.

Chase Cook, Islesboro, defeated Josh Farrington, Foxcroft Academy, 8-5; and lost to Oliver Bois, Hampden Academy, 0-6, 3-6.

Brady Marchessault, Ocean, lost to Jacob Steeves, Skowhegan, 3-8.

Ethan Hall, Bel, defeated Cyrus Blake, Bangor, 8-2; and lost to Jeremy Turner, Calais, 0-6 0-6.

Girls

Madison Farris, Bel, defeated Mia Buzzeo, Hermon, 8-2; and defeated Alexis Doten, Calais, 7-5, 6-2, to advance to the Round of 52.

Elle Ashmore, Med, defeated Shelby Myrick, Mount Ararat, 8-0; and lost to Ella Pelham, Waterville, 4-6, 2-6.

Hannah Fiske, CH, defeated MacKenzie Curran, Gardiner, 8-1; and lost to Inga Zimba, Waterville, 0-6, 0-6.

Kat O’Brien, CH, lost to Haylee Peacock, Gardiner, 8-9 (tiebreaker).
