BELFAST — Belfast Area High School students in Chip Lagerbom's Archaeology class are currently learning about Maritime Archaeology as part of the Belfast Marine Institute curriculum. This includes sunken and fore-shore shipwrecks. Fore-shore vessels are accessible at low tide.

The class recently visited the fore-shore wreck on the Passagassawakeag River above the bridges. Students were tasked to come up with hypotheses as to what kind of vessel it was, what it was used for, how old the vessel might have been, and what happened to it. They then had to offer evidence they gathered supporting their hypotheses. Finally, they produced a poster of information about the wreck including a scale drawing and photos of their visit.

This has been a long-term visual study of the vessel, BAHS students have been visiting and conducting research on it for over twelve years.

Belfast Marine Institute students in Genna Black and Chip Lagerbom's Marine Studies class recently began their safety certification Fishing Vessel Drill Conductor training with John Macmillian.

One aspect of the safety course is learning how to fill your pants to become a flotation device. Others are to protect your face from waves, toxic chemicals, and other things in the water while remaining afloat.

Students also worked on becoming more comfortable in a water situation and how to tread water for a set amount of time.
