BELFAST — The 19th annual Festival of Champions cross country meet was held Saturday, Oct. 3 at Troy Howard Middle School in Belfast, albeit a scaled down version of the event.
Traditionally, the event draws more than 1,500 runners representing roughly 70-80 schools from across Maine, the New England region, and even Canada travel to Belfast for the annual competition.
The COVID-19 pandemic, however, greatly reduced the number of participants this year.
Nearly 130 runners from Bangor High School, Hampden Academy, Belfast Area High School, Bucksport High School, Orono High School, Mount Desert Island High School, Ellsworth High School, Brewer High School, Old Town High School and George Stevens Academy participated in the event.
In the girls division, Belfast finished ninth of the nine teams scoring with a total time of 2:10:00.65. Bangor High School finished first with a total time of 1:45:05.42.
In the boys division, Belfast finished seventh of the 10 teams scoring with a total time of 1:36:55.35. Bangor High School finished first with a total time of 1:26:06.85.
