Elementary Fall Literary Buffet
Over the last couple of weeks, the Elementary Garden Educators teamed up with the Elementary Librarians to put on the 2nd annual fall Literary Buffet. Kristen Byrer came up with the Literary Buffet, where she transforms the library into a cozy restaurant and selects a "buffet" of books on a certain food topic for students to explore while they enjoy a snack. For the past two years, the fall Literary Buffet has centered on apples we've harvested from the district's orchards. Students get to make fresh cider using the district's cider press, and then read apple books while they taste it. This year, students also got to eat popping corn grown in the school gardens. Last spring, 3rd graders planted the popping corn in the gardens at CASS, Ames, and Nickerson. When they returned to school this fall as 4th graders, they harvested and processed it. It's always thrilling when we get to eat the things that we've grown!
